Newport, RI for Any Season
I discovered Newport as a kid, making the 90-minute drive just to enjoy its expansive beaches, rolling waves, and charming, eclectic town—everything you could want in a beach getaway. Year after year, I kept coming back, in both summer and winter, as Newport became a magical place for me. So let me tell you why it’s great in every season.
Summer – Newport may seem like an obvious summer destination, but what sets it apart from other New England beach towns? First, the beaches are unmatched—soft white sand and rolling waves unlike the rocky shores elsewhere in the region. Watching the surfers is a bonus. The town itself is full of life, with charming shops, famous fudge, and incredible restaurants. Cool off with a world-famous mudslide at O’Brien’s after a long beach day. And when the sun sets, Newport’s nightlife shines—live music fills the bars (especially if you catch the legendary Never in Vegas), and historic venues make summer nights even more unforgettable.
Winter – I can never decide which season I love more in Newport. There’s something magical about the historic hotels, like the Viking, adorned with twinkling lights and grand Christmas trees. Step outside onto the cobblestone streets, where the crisp winter air makes that first warm breakfast even better before heading to the mansions. The Breakers stuns with its towering poinsettia tree in the foyer, transporting you back to the Gilded Age as you learn about the Vanderbilts and their lavish legacy. Stroll through town for some holiday shopping at charming boutiques, then indulge in a midday oyster. As evening falls, sip champagne by the fire at The Vanderbilt before dining at one of Newport’s renowned restaurants. End the night playing pool at Smugglers, the ultimate dive bar.
